Brickie warned he must curb his drinking habits
A Corrandulla block layer who became abusive to Gardai while intoxicated, paid the price at Galway District Court this week where he was ordered to pay 500 in fines. Daragh Conaty (21), Clonboo, Corrandulla, Galway, pleaded guilty to breaching the peace and to refusing to leave an area and go home when directed to do so by a Garda at Renmore, Galway, in the early hours of January 12 last. Inspector Pat McHugh said gardai were called to a disturbance at Renmore and they found a number of youths in the area who were intoxicated. One garda spoke to Conaty and he refused to leave the area and go home. Instead, he began to verbally abuse the garda and was then arrested. The court heard the accused had two previous convictions, one for drink driving and the other for urinating on a public street. Defence solicitor Olivia Traynor said that from talking to Conaty he seemed to be a very decent sort, but drink was an underlying factor which kept bringing him before the courts and he had told her he could remember very little about the night in question because he was so intoxicated. She said she had explained to him that he was on a "sticky wicket" given his previous convictions. She said he worked as a block layer who had been let go from permanent employment after Christmas but he was managing to pick up work here and there since. Judge Mary Fahy reminded Conaty he had previous convictions and would need to be very careful or he would end up in more serious trouble. She asked him if he had done anything about his drinking and he replied he had not drunk much since this incident occurred. Judge Fahy said she would give Conaty a chance to prove that he had curbed his drinking but she warned him he should ensure he did not appear before the court again. She fined him 300 for refusing to obey the directions of the garda and 200 for breaching the peace.
