Suspended sentences for woman who cashed stolen cheques
A Ballinasloe woman charged with cashing several stolen cheques in an Oranmore supermarket received suspended prison sentences for the offences at Galway District Court this week. Claire Nutley, Kilmalaw, Aughrim, Ballinasloe, pleaded guilty to cashing six stolen cheques to the value of 945 on six different dates between December 17 2005 and January 25 2006 at SuperValu, Oran Town Centre shopping centre, Oranmore. The accused had appeared before the court last year and was put under the care of the Probation Service, but she failed to appear at subsequent court hearings and a bench warrant was issued two weeks ago for her arrest. Garda Angelina McCormack gave evidence at this week's court of executing the bench warrant. Defence solicitor Adrian MacLynn said his client had not been in court two weeks ago due to a severe medical problem, which resulted in her breaking her collar bone. He said she had been making very good progress for a time under the care of the Probation Service but things got out of control for her, she lost her job, and she had failed to keep some appointments and had failed to come to court. Judge Mary Fahy said she was aware that Nutley had faced similar charges before Ballinasloe District Court. They had been dealt with and Nutley had been placed on probation. Judge Fahy said she would not be placing the accused on probation because she did not comply with the directions of the Probation Service and had been given too many chances with too many adjournments being granted. Mr MacLynn asked for leniency, stating the county council had repossessed his client's house because it was unfit for human habitation, with rats and a fire causing damage there. Judge Fahy said the accused had not co-operated with the Probation Service and she imposed sentences totalling six months, which she suspended for two years.
