Galway's League action
The first action for Liam Sammon and his Galway football team in the new Allianz football and hurling leagues is a mouth-watering home clash with Laois on Sunday February . Galway will play their first away game the following week on February 17 when they travel to Newbridge to face Kildare. On March 2 Galway have another home game against Tyrone, while the following Saturday they will play their only game of the group under lights when they travel north to Ballybofey to play Donegal at 7pm. The Tribesmen have their third clash against an Ulster side when they play Derry at home on March 30 and on April 6 they will travel to the neighbouring county to have an eagerly awaited meeting with Mayo. Liam Sammon will have his final group game on April 13 when Galway will host the All Ireland Senior Football Champions Kerry in a game that should bring a packed house to Pearse Stadium. Ger Loughnane canot seem to avoid his old foes, as Galway hurlers' opening clash is with Clare on February 10. Clare will be managed by Mike McNamara who was with Loughnane during his successful time with the Banner men. Loughnane's men will then travel to play Offaly on February 17 and they will have a home game against Tipperary on March 9. A week later Galway will travel to Laois, while their final group game is away to Limerick.

Moycullen suffer first defeat of the season
An Cearnog Nua, Moycullen 38 Team Garveys, St Marys, Castleisland 80
Moycullen suffered their worst defeat in nine years of National League basketball when they fell by 80 - 38 to home side Team Garveys in Castleisland on Saturday evening. At this exact stage last year Moycullen handed an 8646 drubbing to Castleisland, and Moycullen will hope they can consign the game to the record books and move on as Castleisland were able to do last season. Castleisland got off to a great start, and buoyed by their early success, they dominated all facets of the game throughout. In contrast Moycullen were slow out of the blocks and soon fell behind by a big margin. Castleisland's new addition this season, Limerick inter-county footballer John Galvin, tormented Moycullen early on, hitting eight of their first 10 points as they moved into a 10-4 lead. John Cunningham came off the bench for Moycullen to hit three baskets, but Castleisland continued to score at the other end through Galvin and Michael Broderick. With the score at 16-10, Moycullen looked to have steadied the ship, but the quarter ended with Castleisland's three guards, Declan Wall, Liam Brosnan, and young Paudie Fleming hitting a three-pointer each to stretch the lead to 25-10 at the end of the quarter. The outside shooting blitz continued for Castleisland in the second quarter. Fleming with two three pointers and Brosnan with another made it six threes in a row for the home team as they stifled any hope of a Moycullen comeback. Cian Nihill found his range for Moycullen, hitting eight points in the quarter. while Nollaig Cunningham, Glenn Hynes and Garnett Griffin battled manfully but, despite a Paul O'Brien three, they had fallen another five points behind at half time, 47-27. Any hope of a Moycullen comeback ended in the third quarter. They played like a team that had already conceded the game and Castleisland happily capitalised. They turned the ball over at will, gifting a series of easy scores to a rampant Castleisland side and, even when they got into an offensive set, they never looked like breaking down a resolute Castleisland defence. A miserly four-point return for the quarter was probably as much as they deserved as Castleisland romped away to a 69-31 lead after the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw both sides run their benches and, for the first time in the game, Moycullen managed to slow the Castleisland offence. Youngsters Stephen Tummon, Dylan Cunningham, David Lee, Eoghan Maxwell, and Tomas Gilson all got valuable National League court time and performed quite well. Tummon and Gilson both got on the scoresheet as the game wound down to the inevitable conclusion. In the end, the margin was 42, 80-38 as Castleisland moved into a three way tie at the top of the table with Tralee and Moycullen. An Cearnog Nua, Moycullen: Cian Nihill (14), John Cunningham (6), Nollaig Cunningham (6), Paul O'Brien (3), Tomas Gilson (3) , Glenn Hynes (2), Garnett Griffin (2), Stephen Tummon (2), James Loughnane, Dylan Cunningham, Eoghan Maxwell, David Lee.
