BREAK-AWAY
TRAVEL WITH UNA SINNOTT

Celebrate the fiddle in Derry
The ancient walled city of Derry is the perfect spot for a break, and what better time to go than during the city's annual celebration of traditional music. The Wall 2 Wall Fiddle Fest will take place from Thursday September 27 to Sunday September 30, and will explore the junction where the fiddle and violin meet and celebrate the versatility of the instrument with a mix of classical violin, traditional, American roots, and jazz. Acts at the festival include the Grammy Award winning Turtle Island Quartet, Liz Carroll, Frankie Gavin, Catherine Leonard, Raphael Oleg, the Ulster Orchestra, and the Mamou Playboys, along with a fiddle jamoboree featuring leading musicians from the traditional, jazz, and classical worlds on the same stage. Derry is the only walled city in Europe not to have had its walls breached, despite several attempts including the disastrous Siege of Derry during the Williamite War in 1688. The city walls remain intact and can be walked, and a number of tours are available on foot or in a bus or taxi. The Tower Museum, located within the walls, gives an impressive overview of the city's history, while the Museum of Free Derry in the Bogside area tells the history of the city during the Troubles and the story of Bloody Sunday. Visitors can also enjoy visits to the murals of the Bogside as well as the Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall, where the Siege of Derry is commemorated every year, and the impressive St Columb's Cathedral, a gothic structure built in 1633 which survived the siege unscathed. Derry has a rich cultural heritage and is the birthplace of many well-known Irish musicians, including The Undertones, The Divine Comedy, and Phil Coulter. The city has a huge number of galleries, theatres, and arts centres to keep visitors entertained, including the artist-led Void Arts Centre, the multi-media The Nerve Centre, award-winning community arts centre The Playhouse, and the Verbal Arts Centre, dedicated to literature. Tickets for main events at the Wall 2 Wall Fiddle Fest are available from the Millennium Forum Box Office on (048) 7126 4455. Further information on the city is available from the Derry Tourist Information Centre on (048) 7126 7284.
