Madonna takes a shine to Galway photographer's work
BY KERNAN ANDREWS Rock icon Madonna was so taken with the work of Galway photographer Gerard Keenan that one of his photographs was given to her as a birthday present recently. Madonna's manager came across Keenan's White Horses No 2 and was so impressed with it, that she thought it would make a good birthday present for the star. A 5ft x 5ft7 print of the picture was ordered and shipped to Madonna's house in Tollard Royal in Wiltshire. By all accounts the singer-songwriter and her family loved the picture. Keenan's equestrian photos as well as portraits, landscapes, and other works can be viewed and ordered on line at www.gerardkeenan.com

`Spending a penny' in bus shelter costs man 450
Spending a penny in a bus shelter near a busy road cost a Ballybane man a 450 fine at Galway District Court this week after he became abusive and aggressive towards Gardai who caught him in the act. Nathan Nolan (26), 82 Clareview Park, Ballybane, Galway, pleaded guilty to being drunk in public, breaching the peace and to committing an act contrary to public decency, i.e. urinating in public, at Dublin Road, Galway, on August 12 last. Garda Peter McGuinness and a colleague were on patrol at 11.25pm on the Dublin Road when they observed the accused urinating in a bus shelter at the side of the road. Traffic was going by and a number of houses also overlook the shelter, Inspector Gerry Roche told the court. He said Nolan became very abusive towards Garda McGuinness when he got out of the car to speak to him about urinating in public. Nolan, who at first said he had not been abusive and was only admitting to the charge of urinating in public, then decided to change his mind and said he was pleading to all of the charges after Inspector Roche said Garda McGuinness could give evidence, if called upon, to substantiate the Public Order charges. Hearing this, Nolan said, "Just to get this over with, I'll plead guilty. I'll take my medicine now." In reply to Judge Derek McVeigh, Nolan said he was unemployed, lived at home with his parents and was a father. He said he had been "caught short" while following his girlfriend to the shop and he said he had his back turned to traffic while urinating. "I became a bit upset that the Gardai arrested me for urinating," he added. Judge McVeigh fined Nolan 450 for breaching the peace on the night in question and took the remaining two charges into account.
