The law caught up this week with a man for offences he committed over three years ago when fines totalling 1,050 were imposed on him at Galway District Court. Anthony Walsh(37), 9 Gaelcarrig Park, Newcastle, Galway, pleaded guilty to being drunk in public and to failing to obey the directions of Garda Vincent Jennings and leave the vicinity of Waterside, Woodquay, on May 26, 2004. Walsh failed to appear before Galway District Court in June, 2004, to answer the charges and a bench warrant was issued at the time for his arrest. He again came to the attention of the Gardai on June 21 last, when he was found to be in possession of a small amount of cannabis resin.

Defence solicitor Sean O'Carroll said his client had been living in England in 2004 and was home on holidays when he got into trouble after drinking with friends at Waterside. He returned to England and never faced the charges. Mr O'Carroll said his client had returned home recently and had a parttime job until he injured his hand. Judge Derek McVeigh convicted and fined Walsh 450 for failing to obey the directions of Garda Jennings in 2004, and imposed a 100 for being drunk in public at that time also. A further 350 fines was imposed on Walsh for failing to appear before the court in June, 2004, and 150 for having cannabis in his possession when arrested more recently.

Make new friends and get fit at tea dance
BY MARY O'CONNOR The local health authority and community groups have joined forces to organise tea dances to encourage over 50s to become fit and make new friends. The dances will take place at the Claregalway Hotel, Claregalway on Sunday from 3pm to 6pm and will continue every Sunday until mid March. Paul Gillen, health promotion officer with the HSE West, says tea dances are a "fantastic way to meet new friends and become active in a fun way". Various bands will play old time favourites. Some of the attractions will include Shillelagh, Hearts Delight, Country Roads and Cahir Sounds. Tea /coffee and scones will be served mid afternoon. Admission is 7 and the proceeds will go towards the running costs of the events. Doors open at 2.30pm. Tea dances are very popular in many parts of the country and are beneficial to all the participants involved, according to the HSE West. "It is important for people to socialise, meet each other and have a laugh in a relaxed atmosphere and also enjoy themselves at the same time."
