Youth charged with spate of crime to stay in care facility

A 15-years-old youth who is charged with a spate of crime allegedly committed over a twoyear period was granted bail at Galway District Court this week after agreeing to stay voluntarily at a Health Services Executive-run facility. The youth, who may not be named for legal reasons, faces a plethora of charges, some of which date back to 2005. He is charged with stealing two cars from two housing estates in the city on November 23 last year and on August 11 last, respectively. He is charged with assaulting a man at

McGreal's shop, Ballybrit on September 20, 2006, and with assaulting a woman in Castlepark, Ballybane, on June 19, 2006. The youth also faces several charges involving the theft of property from houses, shops and parked cars in the city over a three month period in 2005. He had been remanded in custody to Oberstown Detention Centre for young offenders at last week's court sitting following his most recent offence, allegedly committed on August 11 last when he took a car from outside a house in Clareview Park, Rahoon.

His solicitor, Sean O'Carroll, told the court this week that a place had become available for the youth at St Joseph's in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, and he had agreed to go there voluntarily. Judge Conal Gibbons said that as Judge Mary Fahy had dealt with the youth initially he would remand him on bail to appear before her at the Children's Court on September 20 next. Bail was granted on condition the youth go to St. Joseph's and reside there pending his appearance before Judge Fahy on September 20.

BY JULIE TIERNEY The Ballinasloe Horse Fair has received a major boost with the recently opened Shearwater Hotel taking over sponsorship of the Queen of the Fair competition. The Ballinasloe Horse Fair runs from Saturday September 29 to Sunday October 7 with the annual October horse fair taking place on Sunday September 30 September and Monday October 1. The Queen of the Fair night marks the lead up to the festival. Galway Bay FM's Ollie Turner will act as compere for the selection of the Queen of the Fair in The Shearwater Hotel, Ballinasloe on Friday September 14. The winner will be involved in the participation in various events during the fair and festival including the official opening of the fair,
