Capture healthy ageing on camera
BY MARY O'CONNOR People, including visitors to Galway, are invited to enter their favourite photographs which capture `Healthy Ageing' in the city for a novel competition. It is the brainchild of Galway Healthy Cities project which is committed to placing the health and wellbeing of people at the heart of its decision making process. Evelyn Fanning, Health Service Executive West Galway Healthy Cities chairperson, says healthy ageing focuses on the ability of people of all ages to live a healthy, safe and socially inclusive lifestyle. "We are asking budding photographers to think about healthy ageing and how that concept can be captured in a photograph." There are four categories from which to choose, she explains. "(1) Enabling and supportive environments. This could include nice places to walk, facilities, amenities. (2) Connecting with others through family, friends and the wider community for example having fun and mixing with people of all ages. (3) Life long learning which may include learning, teaching or sharing experiences, stories, music, computers, art and sport. (4) Supporting healthier choices so that the healthy choice becomes the easy choice, for example anything that captures people having healthier options or being active." There are under 18 and over 18 categories and the closing date for entries is August 31. The winning photographs in each group will receive a 100 prize. Selected images will go forward to an exhibition during Positive Ageing Week which runs from September 28 to October 6. Two photographs will be entered in the World Health Organisation's European Healthy Cities Networks Photo Competition taking place in France from October 10 to 13.
