Bail for man facing charges in Ballinasloe and Galway
A Ballinasloe man appeared in custody before Galway District Court this week but was later released on bail to appear before the court again in October. Michael Coogan, Shankill, Kilkerrin, Ballinasloe, was arrested by Garda Claire Burke who told the court she executed a bench warrant issued by the court at an earlier date for Coogan's arrest. Coogan is charged with stealing a bottle of vodka from Dunne Stores, Edward Square, Galway, on July 25 last. He is further charged with being drunk and a danger to himself and others and with giving a false name and address to a garda at Dyke Road car park, Galway, on July 7. Inspector John Galvin said gardai were not objecting to bail in relation to the Galway charges and he indicated that Coogan had further charges pending against him at Ballinasloe District Court. Judge Aeneus McCarthy remanded Coogan on his own bail to appear before Ballinasloe District Court on September 5 next to answer the Ballinasloe charges and he remanded him on bail also to appear before Galway District Court on October 1.

Permission sought for new Nuns Island development
BY KERNAN ANDREWS Planning permission is being sought to demolish two buildings on Nuns Island and build a new development which will also make use of its canal side location. Geoff Canavan has applied to the Galway City Council for permission to demolish what are described as "two dilapidated buildings" at 26 (Canavan House) and 34 Nuns Island Street. Permission is sought to build in their place a mixed use development made up of two buildings, as well as all ancillary site development works. One of the proposed buildings will be a three storey structure facing onto Nuns Island Street, comprising approx 335sq m of office space. The other will be a four storey building facing onto the adjoining canal to the west, comprising eight apartments. In a letter to City Hall, dated July 11, Simon J Kelly and Co Architects said the proposed development would be inkeeping with city council policy. Council policy is to enhance inner city residential areas through e nv i r o n m e n t a l improvement schemes. The letter says the current properties are "poorly maintained" and make little use of their canal side location. "Through this development," the letter read, "the canal side will be developed and maintained, providing high quality amenity for occupants and users". It is also policy to "protect and enhance" residential areas by " d i s c o u r a g i n g encroachment" from commercial development. The letter says the current proposal will meet that by "introducing a residential component with the reduction of an existing commercial entity
