Stranded race-goers found drunk on busy road
A trip to the the Galway Races proved costly for two Dublin men found by Loughrea Gardai wandering along the roadside in a drunken stupor as they tried to make their way home on foot. Non runners Paul Flynn (33), 16 Knockmore Drive, Tallaght, Dublin 24, and his neighbour and friend, Mark McGowan, 21 Knockmore Crescent, Tallaght, Dublin 24, pleaded guilty to being drunk and a danger to themselves and others near Corrib Oil, Dublin Road, Loughrea on Bank Holiday Monday, August 6. McGowan, who celebrated his 31st birthday this week, and Flynn were reported to Garda John McDonagh at Loughrea Garda Station by a concerned member of the public who had seen them on the main Galway to Dublin road at 11 am last Monday. Garda McDonagh said he went to the Dublin Road where he found them in a highly intoxicated state wandering along the roadside in an effort to make their way home to Dublin. Garda McDonagh explained the pair had come to the Races as passengers in a friend's car but he was arrested for drunken driving and they were left stranded with no way of getting home. Defence solicitor Adrian MacLynn said his clients had been overcome with alcohol on the day in question. He said they had intended going to the Races but were too late. "They were left stranded on a sea of alcohol. Perhaps, the fresh air and the scenery added to their intoxication," Judge Conal Gibbons remarked. Hearing McGowan had previous convictions for being drunk in public and for theft, Judge Gibbons fined him 100 while imposing a 50 fine on Flynn.
