Mulholland puts a stop to the blackening of the prom
BY KERNAN ANDREWS The black coating recently placed on part of the Salthill Promenade has left pedestrians unimpressed, but Cllr John Mulholland quickly put a stop to any more `blacking' of the prom taking place. The promenade runs from Blackrock to the entrance to the Mutton Island causeway. However many regular seaside walkers were unimpressed by the black ecoflex coating recently placed on the Sea Point to Mutton Island section of the prom. Ecoflex, according to Fine Gael Cllr John Mulholland is "one-seventh the price of concrete and not as aesthetically pleasing or as easy underfoot, the colour is obnoxious, and the council sprang it on us". At Monday's city council meeting, Cllr Mulholland demanded that no more ecoflex be placed on the prom. He was supported in this by all other councillors. His motion ensures that the Blackrock to Sea Point section of the prom will remain ecoflex free. "Much of today's prom comes from reclaimed land in the 1960s and we should leave that as it is," he told the Galway Advertiser. "It may be more expensive to carry out any upgrades with concrete but we're talking about the shop window of the tourist industry."
