Youths sent for trial charged with city mugging
Getting the time off is the hard part.
Three men from Tuam who are charged with mugging a young city man as he walked home late at night have been sent forward for trial to the Circuit Criminal Court followiing their appearance before Galway District Court this week. Shane Mannion, Silvercrest, Togherbeg, Tuam, pleaded guilty before Galway District Court last April to robbing the youth's mobile phone, worth 180, at Ros Chaoin, Roscam, Galway on August 4 last year. His co-accused, Henry Cosgrove, Kilbannon, Tuam, and Gary Taylor, Ballinakilla, Togher, Tuam, deny the same charge. Inspector Gerry Roche told the court in April that the DPP had indicated the matter could be dealt with in the District Court on a plea basis only. He said it would be alleged that at 5am on August 4 last a young man was walking home alone when a car pulled up beside him and the three accused jumped out. The inspector said it would be alleged by the prosecution that the alleged victim was hit in the face and robbed of his phone before the three accused drove off in the car. Judge Fahy said the facts indicated robbery with violence and she refused jurisdiction to deal with the case at the time. In court yesterday, Garda Cathal Rodgers gave evidence of serving Books of Evidence on all three accused. On the application of Inspector Roche, Judge Fahy returned all three for trial to the next sittiings of Galway Circuit Criminal Court, commencing on July 17 next.

with acts like the Super Furry Animals' Gruff Rhys and Scottish Gaidhlig singer Julie Fowlis, playing support. The Saw Doctors previously played Glastonbury in 1992 which they commemorated on the cover of their second album All The Way From Tuam - and in 1995. The shows provided a major boost to the band's popularity in Britain, but after 1995, things went quiet on the `Glasto' front, despite continued British success. This year though, the Docs secured a return to the festival, which manager Ollie Jennings is delighted by. "This year we got the call and we can't wait to go back," Mr Jennings told the Galway Advertiser. "Glastonbury has good memories for us. We've made a lot of friends there over the years and got to know people in the nearby village of Shepton Mallet. We even played a benefit night gig there one year to raise funds for the local theatre." The Docs are festival bound this summer, for after their `Glasto' show they will play two other equally prestigious festivals. The band will play the main stage at T in the Park in Scotland on Saturday July 7 and the main stage at Oxegen on Sunday July 8. The new Saw Doctors' single `I'm Never Gonna Go On Bebo Again', will be released on Shamtown Records on July 6.
