Jeremy Irons to give actors' masterclass at this year's Galway Film Fleadh
BY KERNAN ANDREWS Jeremy Irons, one of the most distinguished of English actors will attend the Galway Film Fleadh, which runs from July 10 to 15, and give this year's actors' masterclass. As well as the masterclass, this Academy Award will also take part in a much anticipated public interview which will be open to members of the public. The fleadh's other main guests will be Some Mother's Son and Hotel Rwanda screenwriter Terry George, who will give the screenwriters masterclass; and German filmmaker Volker Schlondorff, who will give the Director's Masterclass. Jeremy Irons was born on the Isle of Wight in 1948, and is one of the major names in British acting - both on stage and in cinema. He moved to London in 1971 and had a number of odd jobs before landing the role of John the Baptist in the hit musical Godspell. In the early 1980s he gained international attention with his starring role in a BBC TV serial adaptation of Brideshead Revisited, after which he was much in demand as a romantic leading man. Mr Irons has enjoyed a successful cinema career, playing a wide variety of roles in different movie genres. He is best known for starring in The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), Damage (1992), Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995), The Man In The Iron Mask (1998), and Kingdom Of Heaven (2005). His next film, The Villa Golitsyn, is currently in pre-production. Irish screenwriter Terry George was born Belfast in 1952. He first came to attention in the 1990s for two powerful political dramas set in the North of Ireland and based on true events. Mr George wrote In the Name of the Father (1993), about the wrongful imprisonment of Gerry and Guiseppe Conlon for the 1974 Guilford bombings. In 1995 he wrote and directed Some Mother's Son, set during the 1981 hunger strikes. He has also written The Boxer (1997) which starred Daniel Day Lewis, and the acclaimed 2004 film Hotel Rwanda, which he also produced. German New Wave director Volker Schlondorff is renowned for his cinematic adaption of major literary works and his direction credits include The Tin Drum which won the 1979 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He has also directed Strike, The Ninth Day, Ulzhan, The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum, and Swann In Love which was nominated for two Bafta Awards. Admission to the above Masterclasses is by application only. All applicants must have experience in the relevant fields. The deadline for application is Friday June 29 at 5pm.
