HSE West helps bridge digital gap
BY MARY O'CONNOR The Health Service Executive West in Galway is one of the first organisations in the region to provide refurbished computers to African schools. The Galway Community Care section of the health authority has donated 40 computers to African schools and colleges which cannot afford to buy them on the open market. The HSE is working closely with the charity Camara which also sends groups of volunteers to train African teachers in basic computer literacy and specialised technology. Camara, which opened its Galway chapter earlier this year, is asking other local companies and organisations to follow the HSE West's example and provide the charity with `end of life' computers. "A nominal recycling fee is charged per unit," explains a spokesperson. "Camara is also involved in the production of computer training and educational material in areas such as HIV/AIDS." Paul Kilkelly, maintenance foreman at Galway Community Care says in this technologydriven world access to information is highly important. "We are delighted to help young people in Africa through the donation of PCs to schools. We would encourage other companies in the west to get involved in this worthwhile project. By providing marginalised communities with the technology tools, training and resources we are enabling them to realise their greatest potential." Michael Kelly of Camara Galway says the charity is also seeking volunteers, particularly people who can provide a "pick up/drop off" facility for obtaining computers in Galway. "We are very grateful that an organisation such as the HSE has come on board with this venture. We're hoping that this is only the start of things to come and that more Galway companies will see the significance of donating unwanted computers to African schools." Local companies or organisations interested in donating a minimum of five unwanted computers should contact Michael Kelly of Camara Galway at (091) 444124 or galway@camara.ie
