Walk in memory of Oughterard mother to raise money for breast cancer
BY JULIE TIERNEY
A five mile walk in memory of a young Oughterard mother who died from cancer two years ago will take place on Sunday June 24. The second annual Sadie Kelly walk, which will take place around Galway city, is being organised by the National Breast Cancer Research Institute, and will raise money for breast cancer research. Last year almost 1,000 people took part with coach loads of walkers

making the trip to Galway from Claremorris, Mullingar, Limerick, and Ennis to participate in the event before heading to Salthill to view the air show. In July 2004, Sadie Kelly contacted the National Breast Cancer Research Institute to take enquire about taking part in its international walking challenge in Thailand at the end of October 2004. The young mother had been diagnosed with cancer two years previously and was very

determined to raise money for cancer research. With the help of friends and her local community, in the Oughterard and Moycullen areas, they raised a substantial sum for breast cancer research over a two-month period. However by September Sadie had to abandon her walking plans as her cancer returned. Knowing her time was limited, she was determined to live life to the full spending her time with her husband and three young children and

organising a party for 300 family and friends with a ceremony where she rededicated her wedding vows. By spring of 2005 she was spending more time in hospital and in June 2005 Sadie passed away aged 28. This year's fundraising walk in her memory will start at 12 noon from the archway at NUI Galway taking on the same route as last year via N e w c a s t l e / We s t s i d e , Threadneedle Road, The Prom, Claddagh heading back towards the Cathedral and finishing at
