Get your adrenaline flowing at the Galway Races
BY MAGDALENA SZULC The Galway Races will run from Monday July 30 to Sunday August 5 this year. People come here from all over the world to experience this unique sporting event and be a part of a truly unforgettable race meeting. The new Killanin Stand will be a state of the art facility. Bar, food, toilet, and tote facilities are provided for all patrons on the ground and first floor. Seats for 700 patrons will also be provided free on the first floor level. Ladies' Day will take place Thursday August 2 and the best dressed person competition will occur on that day too. Judges will be wandering through the crowds and inviting chosen finalists to the Anthony Ryan marquee where the winners will be announced after the main race of the day. A generous first prize and two runner up prizes, with a prize for the best hat, will be awarded to the lucky winners on that day. Mad Hatter Day, sponsored by the Mercer Hotel Group, will take place on Sunday August 5, the last day of the summer meeting. People are invited to dress themselves in mad hats that would bring smiles to Galway faces and be in with a chance to win fabulous prizes. For first-timers to the races, the Galway Racecourse is situated three miles from Galway city and approximately one mile from the Galway Airport. All routes to the racecourse are clearly marked by AA road signs, with continuous bus and taxi services operating to and from Eyre Square on race days. It is advisable to arrive at least one hour before the advertised time of the first race. Turnstiles open approximately two and a half hours before the first race of each day. All OAPs and students are admitted at the discounted rate with proof of a current ID at the turnstiles. There are two pass machines facilities at the rear of the Millennium Stand.
