End the tolerance of bad planning in Galway says Higgins
BY KERNAN ANDREWS Bad planning, a lesser standard of public housing, and poor infrastructure has been tolerated in Galway city for far too long - and this must change. This is the view of Labour president Dep Michael D Higgins, who is calling for "a regeneration programme" for areas which have suffered from poor planning decisions over the years. Dep Higgins said the lack of a Galway city architect which he first called for in 1974 - is "evident in the lesser quality of design and use of public space in one area of Galway city after another". He said "rafts of planning permissions" have been granted without the forward planning of schools, public transport, or other basic amenities. He added: "In some areas of the city, it is questionable if even the basic infrastructure for the disposal of waste water or sewage has been adequately provided for." Dep Higgins is calling on the next Government to launch a regeneration programme for all such areas so the legacy of "acceptance of lesser standards for public housing estates does not go on to yield its terrible results".
