The Galway Adult Literacy service which was based in Prospect Hill has changed its name and moved location. Now known as the Galway Adult Basic Education Service it will be based at Merchant's Road. The new premises will be officially opened on Monday next by Irish Independent education editor and Galway man John Walshe. The name change signals much more than just a change of words, according to recently appointed adult literacy organiser Kieran Harrington. "The service, apart from reading and writing, also provides for basic computers, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), family learning, the

driver theory test and numeracy." He believes the name change will also help remove the "stigma" surrounding the words "literacy" and the literacy services. The service offers one to one and group classes to clients from a wide range of backgrounds, to those with no literacy skills to people who simply need to brush up on specific areas to get a job or promotion. Workplace Basic Education is also offered to both public and private companies, many of whose employees have the opportunity of returning to education and picking up where they left off at school. They can also be "brought up to speed" in the use of certain workplace documents and basic information technology as a literacy tool for writing. Some 62 students are currently attending workplace basic education courses. The statistics speak of a service developing and adapting to suit the changing face of Galway city, says Mr Harrington. " The total number of students has increased from about 500 in July 2006 to almost 800 right now. The number of one to one students currently stands at 50 and over 60 volunteer tutors have been trained in the last six months." The Galway Adult Basic Education Service is also to the fore in providing English and cultural support classes for the migrant community as well as promoting awareness among public and private bodies of methods of facilitating interaction with speakers of other languages.
