HSE to fund 1.2m staffing of cancer support centre
BY MARY O'CONNOR The Health Service Executive is to provide 1.2 million for the staffing of Inis Aoibhinn Cancer Support Centre at UCHG. The 4 million patient care facility, which will open this year, will serve people from counties Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal and Clare and will enable family members or close friends of patients to stay with them while they receive radiotherapy. The initiative, the brainchild of local charity Cancer Care West, is the first such patient centre outside Dublin and Cork. Welcoming the funding, Progressive Democrat TD Noel Grealish said it is a major boost for the centre which aims to be a "home from home with support services". "This is a fantastic boost for Cancer Care West and the Inis Aoibhinn Residence and Cancer Support Centre which forms a key part of its strategy to improve cancer care services for patients in Galway and the West of Ireland. "I would like to congratulate Cancer Care West on this excellent news. The centre is a massive project in terms of scope and ambition and CCW has driven it forward with great determination and energy. It has worked tirelessly on behalf of cancer patients and this has enhanced patient care and wellbeing and had a positive impact on the lives of many people." He praised the HSE's funding decision which he said demonstrated the importance and value it places on the services to be offered in Inis Aoibhinn and its commitment to supporting the excellent work of CCW. "Inis Aoibhinn will greatly support the aftercare service offered to cancer patients, p r o v i d i n g accommodation and a range of complementary therapies to patients receiving radiotherapy at UCHG. The residence and cancer support centre will offer 30 ensuite bedrooms and facilities for patients' partners or guests. It will also provide a diverse range of services to cancer patients such as relaxation therapies, stress management, and individual and family c o u n s e l l i n g programmes. The overall emphasis of the facility will be on patient welcome and support and improving the quality of life of cancer patients." He said the centre will offer hope and comfort to cancer patients and their families. "The experience of cancer patients coming to Galway for radiotherapy treatment will be greatly enhanced by Inis Aoibhinn, which will offer hope and comfort to people going through the trauma of cancer treatment. This latest announcement is a very positive step forward which will support the practical, day-to-day running of Inis Aoibhinn."

Just like summer, without the heat -- The sun made a welcome return to Galway this week, despite the plummeting temperatures. This picture by Mike Shaughnessy shows three hardy souls doing the cliche-ed thing of watching the sun go down on Galway Bay.
