Oranmore urgently needs gardai walking the streets says candidate
Oranmore needs at least two Gardai patrolling the streets during late night socialising hours, according to local FG candidate Cllr Fidelma Healy Eames. She made the call n the aftermath of three serious incidents in Oranmore over the Christmas period which illustrated to her the need for a visible Garda presence patrolling the streets during weekend socialising hours from 10pm to 2am. "This is not a new call for a visible Garda presence in Oranmore, but it is a renewed call in light of recent attacks. " While Gardai resources were deployed from Galway within 30 minutes, it is completely inadequate when random sudden attacks of this nature take place. Gardai need to be on the spot and available in the town. Moreover and most importantly a visible garda presence would be quite likely to prevent unprovoked attacks of this nature taking place, said Cllr Healy Eames. The terror people have described to me at having to be locked into the pub during this serious incident on Stephen's Day is not normal. People have a right to feel protected and not in the middle of a battlezone when socialising. "I have made numerous calls in the past for community gardai for Oranmore but there has never been an increased reliable dedicated force for Oranmore, it has only been temporary at best. "Oranmore is no longer a little village, it is a town with a large population that needs matching garda resources. I have written to the Garda Commissioner and Superintendent seeking a meeting to discuss the overall situation of garda resources for Oranmore, said Healy Eames.
