Medication up to 140 per cent cheaper in the North than here, says Kitt
A local Fianna Fail senator has slammed as "ludicrous" the fact that medication on sale in the North or in mainland Europe could be up to 140 per cent cheaper than its equivalent here. Calling for the increased sale and use of generic or unbranded drugs East Galway Fianna Fail Senator Michael Kitt said he will be raising the issue in the Senate on behalf of his local constituents. "I've been approached about this issue and I have to say it sounds ludicrous that drugs on sale in the North or on mainland Europe could be up to 140 per cent cheaper than their equivalent on sale here. A lot of people, including a number of my own constituents, are reliant on these drugs for health purposes, and to see that they are paying so much over the odds is proving very frustrating for them." He said cholesterol and blood pressure medication is 50 per cent more expensive in Galway than in the North or in England." "But medication for prostrate cancer seems to be the worst case at 140 per cent more expensive here. It is expensive enough for people to keep on top of their health problems without the adding issue of being `ripped off' because only particular branded drugs are available. "Generic drugs are more widely available in other countries and they are the same as their branded equivalent in dosage, safety, strength and intended use
