The Teaching's of Jesus Christ Guest Speaker:
Marc's a happy Mayoman after Daniel chart success
BY DECLAN VARLEY There were not many happy Mayo folks around on Sunday last after the football fiasco, but at least one was smiling after a song he co-wrote stormed into the UK Top 30 charts. Galway-based and Crossmolina native Marc Roberts who represented Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest some years ago has been writing songs with his friend Daniel O'Donnell for the past few years and last Sunday their first released collaboration went into the UK charts at No 21. The song Crush On You was performed by Daniel on last Friday night's Late Late Show and its poppy nature is bringing Daniel in a different musical direction. However, it seems to have gone down well with the thousands of Daniel fans in the UK who went out in droves to buy it when it was released last week. Marc who presents a weekly radio show on Galway Bay fm has written the majority of the songs on Daniel's new album and the Mayoman's songwriting stock is set to soar after this initial success. Already many American publishing companies are in hot pursuit of Marc as his somgwriting reputation grows by the month.

Transfer of Roches to Debenhams complete
BY JULIE TIERNEY The full transfer of Roches Stores to Debenhams was completed last Thursday, following approval by the Irish Competition Authority. A spokesperson for Debenhams confirmed the UK department store chain, which paid 29m for nine Roches Stores, will have the stores fully integrated within 12 months. "The stores will be converted to the Debenhams' fascia and trading format during the course of the current financial year, within nine to 12 months," he said. Debenhams, which has been actively searching for a suitable site in Galway for a number of years, confirmed its interest in the Irish chain in early July. Two weeks ago employees voted in favour of an offer made by Roches Stores in relation to pension funds and loyalty payments. The consensus paved the way for the closure of the deal following the sale of the Irish chain to the UK retailer. In the deal Roches Stores agreed to pay loyalty payments of between 175 and 6,000 to staff depending on the length of service, a 14.8 million payment into the pension fund to make up for the existing shortfall, and the protection of staff's terms and conditions on the sale of the company.
