Judge unimpressed by pair found fighting in Eyre Square
"Look at them. You'd think butter wouldn't melt in their mouths, but I bet in Eyre Square that night it was a different story," Judge Mary Fahy commented while dealing with two young men who were found fighting each other in the Square earlier this month. David Doherty (22), Ballyheeney, Shrule, Co Mayo, and Christian Coady (19), 15 Convent Park, Kinvara, each pleaded guilty at Galway District Court this week to being drunk in public and to breaching the peace at Eyre Square, Galway, at 4am on September 10 last. Garda Marcus Flynn said he received a report from members of the public that an altercation was in progress in the Square and he found the pair fighting each other. Both accused told Judge Fahy they did not know each other prior to this incident. Coady said he was queuing for a taxi with his girlfriend and was not exactly sure what happened because he had drink taken but his girlfriend told him later that he had `words' with Doherty and a fight broke out. Doherty agreed that words had been exchanged and that he had drink taken also. Neither was prepared to comment further. Eyeing up the pair of them, Judge Fahy said it was all down to drink. "It's hard to get a word out of you both today - not like the night you were in the Square. You're a sorry sight," the judge said. Garda Flynn said both accused had apologised to him for their behaviour subsequently. Judge Fahy noted that the pair's behaviour in court was quite different to that in Eyre Square. Inspector O'Donnell informed her that while Coady had no previous conviction, Doherty had one for a driving offence. Judge Fahy convicted and fined Coady 100 for being drunk and took the more serious charge of breaching the peace into account. She convicted and fined Doherty 200 for breaching the peace and 100 for being drunk.
