Calling Elvis -- Pop Idol Gates in The King lives Galway to combat on in aid of stammering Galway Hospice
BY MARIA DALY AND AOIFE POTTER-COGAN Well, in the words of the King himself `it's one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, now go, cat, go' in Galway this month as the fourth annual Elvis Fundraiser in aid of the Galway Hospice takes place on August 12. This year John O' Flaherty, aka JD King....Elvis, will take to the stage to entertain an audience with a premier tribute show to Elvis in aid of a good cause. John first became involved with fundraising for the hospice four years ago following the death of his aunt who had been cared for in the Galway Hospice at Renmore. " That is when my family and friends realised just how much dedication is given to each individual patient in the facility. The attention and care is second to none," he said. John O'Flaherty has been involved in the entertainment industry for more than15 years as a professional DJ and singer and had been involved previously with various fundraisers. But the personal experience of the excellent care given by the hospice spurred him on to make a vow, " I made a promise from that time that I would perform our show annually to raise much needed funds for this amazing service." And that is exactly what he has been doing ever since with the aid of a few friends. "From the word go all the crew jumped on board," said John. "The show is where everyone lends a hand to the great cause, supporting acts like well known local musicians and friends." And it seems that all have had experience of the great care given by the hospice. "Since that first show members of the crew have had a family member or friend spend time in the care of the hospice. Every week we hear about someone who we know, who is being cared for by the inpatients or home care teams at the hospice." And why should you attend? "The hospice is a wonderful service and facility that does not get the recognition or funding that it deserves, it depends largely on donations, this is why we help...help us raise funds for hospice," concludes John. The fourth annual Elvis Fundraiser in aid of the Galway Hospice will take place Saturday August 12 in the Corrib Great Southern Hotel, Renmore. Tickets are 10. BY SINEAD MCGOVERN Some pop music fans in the city may be excited to hear that Pop Idol runner up Gareth Gates is in the city this week, passing on tips for how to overcome stammering problems. The 22-year-old singer is teaching an intensive course in speech improvement with the McGuire Programme, a speech i m p r o v e m e n t programme which he undertook himself for two years to overcome his speech difficulties since appearing in the reality TV programme Pop Idol in 2002. The three day course is the first course the pop singer will teach, and will be located in a secret venue in the city centre. The young spiky haired singer, who had hits `Sunshine' and `Spirits in The Sky', will make an appearance on Shop Street on Saturday at approximately 12 noon. The Bradford born star, who was once rumoured to be dating glamour model Jordan, was recently dropped by his music label, Sony BMG. However he has also sat and passed his speech therapist exams, and is now set to make a new career helping others who share his difficulty. He has always been quite outspoken about his stammering and will no doubt be quite a role model for people attending the course in Galway this week. In one interview he said; "Even though you have a disability, you shouldn't let it stop you

from what you want to do. I have met people now who have a stammer, people who can't walk, people who are blind, and some have said to me, `I want to thank you, the courage you had has made me think that I can do what I want'." The McGuire programme runs all over Ireland and the UK, and is held in Ireland three times annually. Another course will be held in Galway in November.
