BREAK-AWAY
TRAVEL WITH SINEAD MCGOVERN

Sightseeing and much more in Seville
The southernmost region in Spain, Andalucia, is maybe one of Spain's least visited regions but reasons for this are certainly not apparent in its capital Seville. Seville lies at the centre of a quite depressed agricultural region which has an unemployment rate of more than 20 per cent. Travelling into the city by car, the difference in it and its surrounds are immediately visible - wealth not to be seen in many other parts of Andalucia is obvious. But because other areas in the region are not so wealthy, a visit To Seville would best be matched with a few days trips out of town, to witness authentic Andalucia as not yet developed for the tourist market. Nearby cities and towns Cadiz and Sanlucar de Baramareda are worth a visit, and a little further away but also a real gem is Tarifa, Europe's most southerly point and the third best windsurfing spot in the world.

Getting there
Aer Lingus flIES to Seville from Dublin and Ryanair has just announced that it will begin flights to the city in December. Seville's airport is about 12km from the city centre. An airport bus goes into the city every half hour and will cost about 3, while a taxi will set you back approximately 20.

measurements have confirmed its number one position. It is said that Christopher Columbus' tomb the Byron is housed in but Cathedral, there has been some controversy over the claim in recent years, with a Cathedral in Havana in Cuba also claiming to house his remains. The Giralda Tower: One of the most outstanding buildings in Seville with a great view of the city from its bell chamber is the Giralda Tower. It is said to be one of the most important examples of Islamic architecture in the world, a legacy of the time the Moors ruled the city from the eighth century. The Alcazar: This fortified palace was occupied by the rulers of Seville from the time of the Romans. Visitors enter the Alcazar from the Plaza de Triunfo, adjacent to the Cathedral. It it simply a garden heaven with spectacular

features, including a maze that is, disappointingly, only high enough for children to really enjoy. You can enjoy the gardens by day or night, and while some of it may not be accessible at night, it is to be best enjoyed under the light of the moon.

Bullfighting
Like it or not, bullfighting is an integral part of Spanish culture, and Seville is home to one of of the best bullfighting venues Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza. An estimated 24,000 bulls are killed before a live audience of 30 million every year in Spain, with many of the audience tuning in on TV. Tickets for a bullfight start at 10, and even though it may not be everyone's cup of tea, it is quite a spectacle to see how enthusiastic the Sevillianos are about it all. What you need to see
The Old City is where you will spend most of your time when visiting Seville. It's at the heart of The Old City that you will find three of the city's great monuments - the Giralda Tower, the Cathedral, and the Alcazar. The Cathedral: The Cathedral in Seville is officially the largest Gothic church in the world. It was previously thought to be the third largest after St Paul's in London and St Peter's in Rome, but new calculations based on cubic
