Lucia's career is not finished, says her new manager
BY SINEAD MCGOVERN Contrary to what was claimed in a national newspaper last Sunday, Lucia Evan's singing career is not over - it's only just beginning. The report sensationally claimed that Lucia had been dropped by her record company, and that she had come to the end of the road in her singing career - just six months after beating thousands of hopefuls to win the RTE talent programme You're A Star in March. However her management company refuted the claims, saying that the 23-year-old Zimbabwe native, who has been living in Galway for six years, is only at the start of what promises to be a bright international singing and writing career. Dermott McAvoy of NDM management took over Lucia's management in May. He was angered by Sunday's article, which he claimed was `sensational and untruthful', and said that while her three month contact with Universal Ireland did end last week, her three-year publishing contract with Sony/ATV still stands. He told the Galway Advertiser that her contract with Universal Ireland was a `local contract', and that while she enjoyed a number five spot with her debut single `Bruised But Not Broken' under the contract, she will now be focusing on launching herself as an international artist. "The future is bright for Lucia," her manager said. "What wasn't really known before is that she is a very talented song writer. She is busy writing songs now, and has turned out a couple of very good ones already. "She is a singer and songwriter of international standards, and we want to take her to that level," he said. He also rubbished claims in Sunday's report that visa problems were behind what was called the `termination' of Lucia's contract, and said that she is not restricted by travel in any way. "Luca is not like the usual plastic, disposable artists that come out of talent programmes, she is a talented singer and you haven't seen the last of her yet," he said. While it is unlikely that we will hear any new releases from Lucia this year, she will continue to live in Galway and work on her song writing, while making occasional live appearances such as last month's Special Olympics in Belfast, and this months Rose of Tralee Festival in Kerry.

Man pays the price for abusing garda in Eyre Square
A 30-years-old Renmore man who shouted abuse at a garda while drunk in Eyre Square last Friday was convicted of the offence at Galway District Court this week. Dara O'Hagan, a single father of two from 2 Glan Rua, Renmore, pleaded guilty to breaching the peace and to being drunk and a danger to himself and others at Eyre Square on July 28 last. Defence solicitor Valerie Corcoran said O'Hagan had gone drinking after hearing some tragic news about a friend, and he wished to apologise for his behaviour on the night in question. Judge Aeneus McCarthy convicted and fined O'Hagan 200 for breaching the peace and took the remaining charge into account.
