Great Southern staff ballot on strike action
Siptu says Great Southern situation as bad as Irish Ferries
BY SINEAD MCGOVERN It will be known tomorrow whether the 420 staff of the Great Southern Hotels in Galway have balloted for strike action. The staff of the Corrib Great Southern Hotel on the Dublin Road voted yesterday, and those in the Great Southern Hotel in Eyre Square will vote on the issue tomorrow. Siptu branch organiser Michael Kilcoyne said yesterday that he believes the workers will vote for the strike, after being faced with conditions that he likened to those faced by the Irish Ferries workers at the end of last year. " New staff at the hotel won't have a pension and won't be paid the existing rate of pay," Mr Kilcoyne said. He criticised the Government for selling another State asset to private interests, who want to `employ slave labour'. If the staff do vote to take action it is likely the strike will be held during either the Galway Arts Festival or the Galway Races - two of the busiest weeks in the tourism season in Galway. It is not known yet who will purchase the hotel group from the Dublin Airport Authority, but it is expected that the six four star and two three star properties will fetch something in the region of 170 million. It is said they will be sold as going concerns by tender no later than Friday July 28. However this date has had to be changed on a number of occasions due to the amount of interest expressed in the group. A spokesperson for the PR company dealing with the sale told the Galway Advertiser yesterday that interest in the group has exceeded all expectations. "There have been more than 100 expressions of interest in the group, from both national and international parties," he confirmed. The Galway Great Southern Hotel is probably the best known of all the original GSHs. It enjoys a city centre location and has 99 bedrooms. The Corrib GSH has 175 bedrooms and sits on a largely under utilised site of close to seven acres and there is considerable scope for further development of surplus lands at this location.

Dangerous driving causing death accused sent for trial
A motorcyclist who is charged with dangerous driving causing death has been sent forward for trial following his appearance before Galway District Court yesterday. Stephen Timothy (24), 56 Gaelcarrig Park, Newcastle, Galway, is charged with dangerous driving which caused the death of pillion passenger John Laffey at Connolly Avenue, Mervue, Galway, at 7am on June 18 last year. He is further charged with drink driving in relation to the same alleged offence and with driving without insurance or a driving licence on the same occasion. Garda Claire Burke told yesterday's court sitting that she had served a book of evidence in the case on the accused yesterday morning. Judge Aeneus McCarthy returned Timothy for trial to appear before Galway Circuit Criminal Court, commencing on October 3 next.
