Long prison term for persistent offender
A man with 77 previous convictions who is disqualified from driving for life was given a 21month sentence at Galway District Court this week for a spate of motoring offences committed in the city last year. John Dodd (40), 112 Innishannagh Park, Newcastle, Galway, pleaded guilty to driving on three separate dates without insurance or a driving licence. Dodd also admitted driving dangerously while trying to get away from Garda Joe Collins who pursued him along Siobhan McKenna Road, on August 5 last. Garda Collins said he observed a car waiting at traffic lights. It was dark at the time and the car had no lights on. He signalled to the driver who drove off at speed on his incorrect side of the road forcing oncoming traffic to brake hard to avoid a collision. Dodd drove onto Rahoon Road and from there onto Old Seamus Quirke Road where he swerved the car onto the wrong side of the road. Garda Collins said he eventually caught up with Dodd when he failed to make a right turn at Bothar Le Cheile because of the volume of traffic at the time. The accused had no insurance or driving licence and was disqualified from driving at the time. Garda Darragh Browne gave evidence of stopping Dodd at Siobhan McKenna road on November 9 last year when he detected him driving without insurance. Garda Paudie O'Shea gave evidence of stopping Dodd five days earlier, on November 4 last year, when he was again found to be driving without insurance. Dodd failed to appear in court to answer the charges and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest. Then, on Monday June 12 last, Dodd kicked and broke a Garda patrol car light while being taken to Galway District Court having been arrested on Sunday on foot of a bench warrant. Inspector Gerry Roche said Dodd had 77 previous convictions, including ones for dangerous driving, no insurance, possession of drugs, assault and Public Order offences. Defence solicitor, Valerie Corcoran said her client wished to apologise for breaking the light of the Garda car. He had been trying to bring his brother, who was vomiting blood at the time, to hospital, when Garda Collins came on them, she added. Judge Mary Fahy said she had to impose a custodial sentence as Dodd was driving while already disqualified. She sentenced him to a total of 21 months in prison and disqualified him for a further five years. Leave to appeal the sentences was granted.
