Revenue tax trawl nets more than 2 million in Galway
Sixteen local individuals and businesses made settlements in first quarter
BY UNA SINNOTT
A total of 16 individuals from Galway made tax settlements worth a combined 2.1 million during the first quarter of this year, according to the latest list of tax defaulters published by the Revenue Commissioners. Various Revenue investigations and audits netted a total of 2,141,609.02 between January 1 and March 31 this year. Of the 16 people and companies named in the latest list of defaulters, 11 were the subject of bogus nonresident account investigations, four were investigated for offshore assets, and two were the subject of investigations into the use of single premium insurance products for tax evasion. The largest settlement made in Galway during the first three months of the year came from Barbara Mannion, a retired employee from Dooneen in Clifden who made a settlement totalling 315,395 in relation to underdeclaration of income tax, a bogus nonresident account investigation, an offshore assets investigation, and an investigation into single premium insurance products. The settlement included 210,733 in interest and penalties. The quarterly settlements bulletin lists those audit settlements where the Revenue Commissioners accepted a settlement of more than 12,700 (or 30,000 for some investigations), including tax, interests, and penalties, instead of instituting proceedings for the recovery of the penalties. Kicking father who slapped his child costs woman dearly
Kicking a father in the back because she did not approve of the way he slapped his six-years-old child's hand on the street, cost an English woman who now lives in Galway 600 in fines at Galway District Court this week. Denise Jones (28), 2 Newtownsmith, Galway, pleaded guilty to assaulting Shane Mulgrew at Abbeygate Street, Galway, on June 15 last and to breaching the peace on the same date. Garda Claire Burke told the court she was walking up Shop Street when Mr Mulgrew told her he had been sitting on a bollard talking to friends when the accused came up behind him and kicked him in the back, knocking him off the bollard and onto the ground. He pointed to Jones who was with a group of people. She denied assaulting the man when asked on two occasions and refused to give her name and address to Garda Burke. Jones ran away when Garda Burke went to arrest her. Jones' friends told the Garda her name and address and said they would bring her to the Garda Station later. Jones later turned up at the station and was arrested. Garda Burke explained that Jones became offended when she saw Mr Mulgrew slap his child on the back of the hand. Mulgrew said he had stopped to talk to friends on the street and his son had been warned on three occasions to stop climbing on a nearby shop window. He said he gave the child a smack on the back of the hand when he wouldn't do what he was told. Judge Mary Fahy told Mulgrew that he could be reported for using force like that, but she pointed out that Jones should have minded her own business and that while she objected to violence being used against the child, she had resorted to violence herself by kicking the man to the ground. Judge Fahy said Jones had simply been showing off to her friends at the time and told the accused it would be more in her line to go out and get a job. She convicted and fined her 400 for the assault and 200 for breaching the peace.
