Queen of the County -1973
Co. Galway this year sees the initiation of a new glam ourous beauty queen com petition for the title of "Queen of the County." It is destined to rank alongside other nationally known beauty contests, if one is to judge by the great amount of interest it has created and indeed the prize of a trip (or honeymoon) in Majorca for two really got the beautiful girls interested. Even the very title gave the competition an element of prestige. The competition is unique because both married and single ladies are eligible to take part and secondly, the method in which the finalists were chosen -- by patrons' ballot at dances during July and August. This exercise in democracy afforded the dan cing public an opportunity of having their say in choosing the finalists and apart from creating interest in the con test, it proved to be thor oughly successful because the ladies chosen are undoubtedly the most attractive ever to line up for a beauty queen final. Other prizewinners in the picture from left: Miko O'Connor (6th), Larry O'Toole (5th), Brendan Dow ling (7) runner-up; Paddy Connolly (5) 3rd, Finbarr O'Mahony captain, Paddy Noonan veteran's prize, and Eamonn Corbett (4th).
T h e final is on Sunday! 30th Sept. and Salthill will be the place to be on that night as crowds converge on it from all parts of the county] A special dinner at the Sacre Coeur Hotel will open thel proceedings at which the! county beauty 'Queens' and! the county football 'Kings'] (the Galway All-Ireland footJ ball team) will be special guests. Following the dinner all will leave for Leisureland amid the excitement and glamour which will accom pany the 'Queens' and the football heroes. Mr. Pat McCarthy, entertainments manager at Leisureland, and an expert when it comes to handling beauty queen finals, will give the proceedings the professional touch from there on. With the parade over, the Queen crowned, and giftt distributed, all the finalists will join the Queen on the floor of the massive ballroom to open the Beauty Queen Ball to the music of Galway's most popular showband The Raindrops. This competition is pro moted by Gorofin G.A.A. Social Committee.
GOLF
GALWAY GOLF CLUB Sunday, Sept. 23rd James Tierney Memorial Trophy, 18 holes Stableford, winner: Donal Silke (8) 39 points, runner-up: Eugene Farrell (17) 38, third: J. Corless (4) 36, gross: G. Molloy 73. Forthcoming fixtures: Sunday, Sept. 30th -- Hcffernan Trophy -- Mixed Foursomes (Open). Saturday, Oct. 6th -- Hamper competition -- Fourball v. Par. Sunday, Oct. 7th -- Ham per competition, Fourball v. Par. A reminder that the post poned Hcffernan Trophy will be played on Sunday next and that the competition is, I have been so informed, an open one. Another reminder, Sunday next is the last day for playing the second round of the First National Building Society's fourball. The annual competition for the Higgins Trophy be tween the Mayo and Galway Garda Golfing Societies will be played at Galway on Monday, Oct. 1st. It will be an 18 hole Stableford com petition with the best eight cards to count. There will be eight plaques for the winning team and numerous other prizes. For quite some time I have been waiting for Donal Silke's name to appear as the winner of a major competition in Galway but while he can -- most times -- relieve Ivor and Mattie of a few bob, he just never seemed to hit top form at the right time. To my mind, Donal, when on his game is the best chipper and putter in Galway. On Sunday last, he came into his own and a long threatening came at last when he won the James Tierney Memorial Trophy by just one point from Eugene O'Farrcll. Donal's 39 points were made up from a 38 front nine and a 35 back nine. The back nine was high lighted by two birdies -- one on the 11 th and one on the 18th. However, Donal's win was really brought about by his second shots to the green which were bang on target each time. Donal is the second of his triumvirate to win this par ticular trophy with Ivor Car roll having won it, I think, two years ago. Mattie, how about you for 1975?
SOCCER
Fixtures for Saturday in the Under 13 League are as follows: South Park, 10.45, West Utd. v. Devon Celtic. South Park, noon, Bohe mians v. Rovers. West Park, 10.45, Mervue Utd. v. O.L.B.C. SUNDAY'S G A M E S West Park, noon, Pierce Cup, Decspo v. Hibernians (M. Long). 3 . 3 0 Joe Ryan Trophy, Mervue Utd. v. St. Bernards Utd. (A. Flannery). South Park, noon, Joe Ryan Trophy, Claddagh Rangers v. Rovers (S. Mannion). 3 . 3 0 Young Cup, Bohemians v. Tuam Town (M. Long). Once again players and fans were disappointed on
Sunday when only one of the three Joe Ryan Trophy ties listed was played. Collegians failed to field a side against Rovers whilst the Mervue Utd. v. St. Bernards Utd. game was called off on Satur day when the latter club notified they would not be able to line out. In the game that was played Claddagh Rangers gained a surprise victory over Hibernians by the odd goal in three after extra time. Rangers led 1-0 at the interval through a goal scored by Martin Hynes after twenty minutes play. Hibernians did most of the attacking throughout the game but their forwards missed numerous chances until ten minutes from time when Jimmy Ward equalised with a shot from thirty yards which goalkeeper Joe King should have saved. The win ning goal came in the first period of extra time, Denis Flynn scoring from a penalty. The Under 13 League gets under way on Saturday with games arranged for three venues. Eleven teams have entered for the competition which is bound to arouse great interest in this grade of football. Two Joe Ryan Trophy games have been fixed for Sunday. At South Park at noon Claddagh Rangers meet Rovers in the first semi-final. Rovers scored a surprise win over Bohemians in the pre liminary round and Rangers eliminated fancied Hiber nians. In what promises to be a rousing cup tie I expect the Blues to advance to the final. Mervue Utd. and St. Ber nards Utd. clash at West Park at 3.30 p.m. The city team had a convincing 5-3 win over West Utd. in their preliminary round game and must be given the vote to qualify for the semi-final against Salthill Ath. The Young Cup League starts on Sunday when Bohe mians face Tuam Town at South Park at 3.30. This will be Tuam's first outing of the season and I expect the Reds to collect both points. In the Pierce Cup League competition Hibernians meet Decspo at West Park at noon. Hibernians, relegated to the second division this season, will need to show improve ment on last Sunday's display against Claddagh Rangers if they are to do well in this division but it would be a real shock if they fail to win on Sunday.
