Man remanded in custody following city assault where man's ear was bitten off
A 23-years-old man charged with assaulting another man in a city centre nightclub last Wednesday night, was remanded in custody with consent to bail following his appearance before Galway District Court yesterday. Damien Moloney, with an address in Ros Cam, who told the court he now lived at 9 Currach Park, Ballinasloe, is charged with assaulting Bryan O'Gara, causing him harm at Boo Radley's nightclub, Forster Street, Galway, on March 1 last. Inspector Pat McHugh said it was alleged the injured man had part of his ear bitten off during the assault and he applied to have the accused remanded in custody on the grounds that he was awaiting further directions from the DPP's office and a more serious charge may be preferred as a result. He said he would not object to bail provided an independent lodgement of 9,000 was handed into court. Applying for bail, defence solicitor Valerie Corcoran said neither her client nor his family could come up with that sort of money. Judge Mary Fahy agreed 9000 was too high. She remanded Moloney in custody with consent to bail on his own surety of 600 and one independent surety of 4,000, half of which must be lodged in court to appear before Spiddal District Court next Friday, March 10. Bail was granted on condition Gardai get 48 hours notice of the identity of the proposed independent surety, that Moloney sign on daily at his local garda station if he meets his bail and that he does not apply for a passport.
