MARY
Scarlet fever
Step out in red, one of summer's hottest shades, and you are guaranteed to get temperatures rising wherever you go this season. This unmistakable colour is evident in everything from pretty polka dot dresses to stripy T-shirts. Full-on red may not be for the fainthearted so if you have reservations, choose a splash of colour in your accessories such as a red bag or shoes. The black and white story is big fashion news too, according to Anthony Ryan's summer fashion show held at the Ardilaun House Hotel recently. The event, which featured stunning performances from the Regina Rogers School of Ballet and the local Performing Arts school and which was in aid of St Joseph's Special School in Newcastle, unveiled all the top looks for summer `06. One of the leading colour combinations this spring - black and white is eminently wearable, elegant and easy to accessorise. It appeared in everything from trousers and jackets to eveningwear and casual attire. Of course these two shades can be worn singly to stunning effect especially when teamed with a tantalising tan. White has a number of faces, sporty, innocent or classy. Add interest with metallic accessories and textured fabrics. Mango, the new exclusive label at Ryan's which brings in international labels twice weekly to the city centre store, showcased a series of top looks. Knitted tops, waistcoats and trousers vied for pride of place with jeans, skirts and vest tops. Spring coats may be lightweight and short but they are big fashion players. Opt for styles with lots of tailoring and eyecatching detail to ensure you cut a dash this season. The trenchcoat is a chic option and should not be overlooked. There are numerous shades from which to choose including cream and perennial white. Juicy colours are prominent this spring, especially in accessories. The best are bright and glossy. Sporty stripes are bold and streamlined and rear their heads often. Checks appear again and again and are most wearable in classic blacks, reds and blues. They work particularly well when teamed with your favourite jeans.
