Man given time to Galway Arts pay compensation Festival for night-club assault programme
A 31-years-old man who punched another man repeatedly in the face when he caught him talking to his girlfriend was ordered to pay 4,000 compensation or else go to prison when he appeared before Galway District Court this week. Donal Naughton, 8A Cluain Airne, Clybaun Road, Knocknacarra, Galway, pleaded guilty to assaulting Paul Prunty, causing him harm at Cuba nightclub, Eyre Square, Galway, on November 28 last, and to breaching the peace on the same occasion. Prunty denied a charge of assaulting Naughton and to breaching the peace during the same incident. After hearing evidence in the case Judge Mary Fahy dismissed the assault charge against Prunty and applied the Probation Act in relation to a charge of breaching the peace. The court heard that Naughton had gone to the bar to get a drink and when he returned he saw Prunty speaking to Naughton's girlfriend. He became very aggressive and punched Prunty a number of times into the face and about the head. Prunty suffered injuries to two teeth, both eyes, and one ear, in what Judge Fahy described as a very vicious and unprovoked assault. She said Naughton had been the aggressor who showed a propensity for violence. She convicted Naughton of assault causing harm and breaching the peace and adjourned the matter to June 12 for payment of 4,000 to Prunty. She indicated that if the money was not paid by then she would impose a prison sentence, but would suspend the sentence if the money was paid.
