Ultimate Career Move e r

Recruitment drive continues in key sectors
BY JULIE TIERNEY The recently published Bank of Ireland `Galway Job Index' shows that 1,899 r e c r u i t m e n t advertisements were placed in local newspapers in the month of October. This represents a modest decline of 14 per cent from the pervious month which saw exceptional demand across all sectors. Reflecting the national trend, recruitment demand in the IT/tech sector grew sharply, up 89 per cent during the month. The construction (+22 per cent) sector which consistently drives recruitment demand across the country saw a steady increase for the month, while demand in the professional sector increased by a marginal four per cent. For the month of October, the education sector (+43 per cent) was back at August levels of demand, reflecting the normally buoyant period for the recruitment of education professionals after the summer break. There was a slight decline in demand in the retail sector (-4 per cent) while manufacturing saw a decline of 22 per cent which followed very high demand for workers in this sector in September. There were notable declines in leisure (-43 per cent), financial (-50 per cent) and healthcare (-48 per cent). Commenting on the `Galway Job Index' regional business manager Bank of Ireland Galway John Lavelle said: "The significant increase in the construction sector reflects the continued buoyancy in this sector in Galway city and county. It is also encouraging to see the significant increase in the IT sector, where several start-ups in this sector are now emerging in Galway."
