Pay & Display machines are staying solar says council
BY KERNAN ANDREWS Galway's solar powered pay and display machines will not have to go electric by being connected to the ESB despite claims to the contrary City Hall has said. This week Fine Gael Cllr Padraig Conneely claimed that the city's 77 solar powered pay and display machines, which were installed at a cost of 540,000, are proving defective and causing motorists problems. "Several of the machines are in shaded areas and affected by dampness," he said. "When motorists insert their 1.50 parking fee the machines will not issue the standard parking ticket." He said that to correct this problem the pay and display machines will have to be reconnected to an ESB cable link. Cllr Conneely estimated that such a job would cost 100,000 but that if there was an ESB powercut it could lead to traffic chaos and illegal parking. "This is an unnecessary cost to be borne by the people of Galway for the mistakes made by the city council. I will be demanding a full explanation from the city council as to how such a serious error should have been made when this solar powered system was installed." In response a spokesperson for the Galway City Council said all pay and display machines in the city are solar powered and will remain so and will not have to be powered by the ESB. Instead the council will be installing a back up system into those machines that have occasionally given problems with paper jamming, etc. "It will have an ESB linked trickle charge and be linked to public lighting so this will ensure the machines stay on," the spokesperson told the Galway Advertiser. "It saves the problems of having to dig up roads and paths to install cables. The entire works will not cost 100,000 as claimed but will only cost 50,000."
