Tiler given time to pay compensation for car he rear ended
A non-national who works as a tiler in the north Galway area was given an opportunity to pay for damage he caused to another car in a hit and run accident, when he appeared before Galway District Court this week. Marek Kowalski, 29 Crescent View, Riverside, rear ended a woman's car at Rahoon Road, Galway, on March 13 last. He left the scene but was arrested a short time later on the Western Distributor Road. A sample taken showed a reading of 83mgs of alcohol per 100 mls of breath. Kowalski was driving with two worn tyres on the front of the car. He pleaded guilty to all of the charges. Defence solicitor James Seymour said his client had very little english and he left the scene to go and get a friend to tell the woman he would pay for the damage to her car. Mr Seymour said his client was adamant that he wanted to pay for the damage. Judge Mary Fahy gave Kowalski a chance to pay and she adjourned the failing to stop summons to July 4, to see if the compensation was paid. She then convicted the accused of drink driving, fined him 350 and disqualified him from driving for two years. Fines totalling 100 were also imposed for the two bald tyres. Mr Seymour asked the judge to defer the disqualification for a time to allow his client, who is a tiler, to make other arrangements and to allow him time to compensate the other party. Judge Fahy refused the application, saying the reading was quite high and there would be no merit in postponing the disqualification.
