Back to basics
A survey carried out by Galway based firm Slendertone to launch Baxolve, its new drug free solution for back pain, reveals that an estimated 160,000 Irish people suffer from back pain every day. Twenty per cent of this group are absent from work regularly at a significant cost to the economy. The study also indicated that more than 50 per cent of chronic back pain sufferers constantly rely on medication. Baxolve combines two clinically proven therapies, TENS t e c h n o l o g y (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, a noninvasive, drug-free and clinically proven method of pain relief) with a medical grade lumbar support belt. Electricity has been used to relieve pain since 2750 BC when the Egyptians took advantage of the unique characteristics of the electric shock produced by Torpedo fish as a method of pain relief. Today, TENS therapy is widely used in hospitals and clinics, particularly during labour but also in the treatment of conditions such as osteoarthritis. It provides a natural solution to pain relief by using the body's natural mechanisms to combat pain. It works by sending comfortable pulses to the nerves, suppressing the pain signals to the brain and releasing endorphins, the body's natural pain relieving chemicals. With Baxolve, TENS is administered directly to the point of pain via a medical grade lumbar support belt. Lumbar support is used to ease lower back pain and prevent the onset of further pain by providing support to the spinal and abdominal muscles. Baxolve costs 199 and is available from selected pharmacies or by mail order from www.slendertone.com or by telephoning 1890 923388.

Caring for your back
Experts say that the increasingly sedentary lives we lead contribute greatly to the back pain epidemic that is now being experienced in the Western world. An office worker can spend anything from 25 to 40 hours a week in a static position working at a computer. Travelling to and from work may involve long journeys either sitting or standing on a train or bus with no room for movement. When we get home, it is often more tempting to sit on the sofa than go out and get some exercise. If you want to keep your back healthy, it is important to keep it moving and to support it properly when you are not.

Tips for a healthier back:
* Always stretch before exercising or other strenuous physical activity * When standing, stand straight with your weight shared evenly between both legs. Try to keep the normal curves in your back at all times. * At home or work, ensure that your work surface is at a comfortable

height for you. Keep your shoulders back and change sitting positions often * Sleep on a comfortable mattress that does not sag. The natural curves in your back and neck should be supported. * When lifting, lift with your knees keeping your back straight. Use your leg muscles to perform the lift. Keep the object close to your body and avoid twisting your back * Improving posture and avoiding unnecessary stress to the back are the key elements in reducing the likelihood of pain occurring
