Thousands of Irish parents are making plans for family breaks and ways of keeping the children entertained during the holidays. If you're looking for something to do in the country, Waterford will have something to offer all ages and tastes when it hosts a four-day festival to coincide with the start of The Tall Ships' Races in July. Some 100 tall ships, 6,000 crew members, and 250,000 visitors are expected to attend the four days of free festival fun from July 6 to 9. Highlights will include seven outdoor stages featuring 40 bands, a spectacular fireworks display, the crews parade, a series of educational events and art exhibitions with a maritime theme, Funderland, a Viking longboat, and an award-winning interactive museum. Nicky Fewer, chairman, Waterford's Tall Ships Race 2005, is thrilled that Waterford has been chosen to host the start of this year's race series and is looking forward to welcoming all visitors, national and international, to the great city. HOLIDAYS & ME Maria Dooley, proprietor MiaMama, Castlebar, Co Mayo
Which three things do you always take on holiday with you? My husband Noel, my visa card, and my camera! A lounge in the sun holiday or a grab the guidebook and let s start exploring holiday? Lounging on the deck chair by the pool while Noel combs thought the guide book planning the holiday itinerary. Who would your dream holiday companion be? Um...my hubbie. Where would that holiday be? A horseback trail in New Zealand exploring the countryside and witnessing some of the breathtaking scenes as seen on the film Lord of the Rings. What culture do you most identify with? Definitely Italian, and not because I have their looks, but I do have their love of pasta and wine. What do you hate most about holidays? Has to be the unpacking. What is the best time of year to get away? A holiday is great whenever I can go, but I like to get away the end of October when the weather is miserable and the evenings are wintery. Where is the most overrated place you've visited? Nice in the south of France. How do you choose a holiday? You learn a lot from listening to other people about their own holiday experiences plus I tend to watch travel programmers and then save up and go!
