Special needs workshop by leading international expert
BY SINEAD MCGOVERN A workshop for teachers, special needs assistants, and health care workers, entitled `Identifying and supporting children with learning difficulties' will be held in the Galway Education Centre on Friday and Saturday April 8 and 9 in the Galway Education Centre. The workshop will be delivered by Dr Christine Mc Intyre of the University of Edinburgh. Dr Mc Intyre was responsible for writing the guidelines for schools in Scotland on dyspraxia, and has provided workshops throughout Britain on a wide variety of areas in the area of special needs. Her main areas of expertise are child development, children with special needs, dyspraxia, and play and research methodology. The workshop will begin on Friday evening with a focus on identifying and supporting children with dyspraxia. On Saturday the overlap of movement difficulties across a range of special needs conditions, such as dyslexia, ADHD, downs syndrome, aspergers syndrome, and autism, will be explained, highlighting the difficulties in making accurate assessments and explaining the resulting frustration of parents and practitioners. Strategies to support the children at school will be suggested, and video clips will illustrate some strategies in action. The course is open to teachers, special needs assistants, and health care workers, and will take place at the Galway Education Centre, Cluain Mhuire, Monivea Rd from 5.45pm to 9.00pm on Friday April 8 and from 9.30am to 3.00pm on Saturday April 9. The course costs 45, and that will include sandwiches on the Friday and lunch on the Saturday. Advance booking is essential as numbers will be limited. Woman repays cost of stolen jacket to avoid prison
A woman who claimed she could not remember what happened to an expensive jacket she stole from a shop, paid 250 to the shop's owner to avoid a prison sentence, when she appeared before Galway District Court this week. Omotolani Ajala, 102 Ros Chaoin, Roscam, Galway, had pleaded guilty to stealing a 250 jacket from David James, St Augustine Street, Galway on February 3 last, when she first appeared before the court last month. At the time she also admitted stealing 145 worth of other clothing from Dunnes Stores, Edward Square, on December 23 last. Inspector Marie Skehill said the property from Dunnes had been recovered but the jacket had not. Defence solicitor James Seymour told the court this week that his client had 250 compensation to hand into court. Last month he said Ajala could not recall where the stolen jacket was but she was willing to pay compensation. At the time Judge Mary Fahy said she would give the accused time to pay compensation for the jacket. If it was not paid she warned the accused she would impose a custodial sentence, but if it was paid she would impose a suspended sentence. The judge relented this week on hearing full compensation had been paid, and instead of imposing a suspended sentence she fined the accused 200 for stealing the jacket and a further 100 for the shoplifting offence at Dunnes Stores.
