Galway to be world's first officially anti-racist city
BY KERNAN ANDREWS Galway is set to launch the first anti-racism strategy in the world when Towards A City Of Equals - the Galway City Anti-Racism Strategy is launched in City Hall on Monday March 21. The strategy, which will seek to make Galway both an intercultural and racism free city, will be launched by the Mayor of Galway Cllr Catherine Connolly. Also speaking at the event will be Elaine Harvey chairwoman of the Galway City Partnership, the organisation driving the strategy. Galway is home to both a settled and Travelling community and the city has become increasingly multicultural over the last five years with many Africans, eastern Europeans, and Asians now living here. However groups like the Galway Refugee Support Group and the Galway People's Resource Centre have also noticed an increase in instances of racism and felt a strategy was needed to combat this and promote inter-culturalism - which seeks to create integration and understanding among different ethnic groups and native and nonnational. The strategy outlines goals and ways such aspirations can be turned into a reality for Galway city. As well as Towards A City Of Equals, the March 21 launch will also see the launch of a shorter document from the Galway City Council, a declaration of solidarity with the strategy which the council is calling on Galwegians to sign and send back to City Hall. The launch is open to the public after 2.15pm when refreshments will be served and music will be provided by Irish and African musicians.

End of an era as supermarket in Roches closes ahead of schedule
BY JULIE TIERNEY It will be the end of an era in Galway this Saturday when the Super Valu supermarket in Roches Stores is to close -- nine days ahead of schedule, to pave the way for the opening of Marks & Spencers in mid-June. The supermarket was expected to close its doors on March 21 according to a press statement issued by the company last month. However signs erected outside the store this week stated it will close on Saturday March 12. British retailing giant Marks & Spencers, which has been actively searching for a suitable site in Galway for a number of years, confirmed in early February it will be replacing the 19,000sq ft space currently occupied by Super Valu supermarket in The Corrib Shopping Centre. Roches Stores ran its own supermarket in this outlet when the store first opened in 1976, until being taken over by Super Valu in 1999. The changeover will involve the closure of the existing supermarket for approximately six to eight weeks during which time M&S will transform the outlet into a state-of-the-art store. All employees are expected to be transferred to the new supermarket. Although the new M&S outlet will be largely concentrating on the grocery side of the market, it will also be retailing a selection of clothing, accessories, footwear, and underwear for women, men, and children.
