New play facilities to open in Loughrea this weekend
BY UNA SINNOTT Youngsters of all ages in Loughrea can look forward to new play facilities, which will be officially opened on Sunday. The opening of the new play areas, which include play facilities for children up to age 12 and an adventure park for teenagers, will be followed by a play day in the facilities from 1pm to 5pm on Sunday. The new facilities are the culmination of a collaboration of the Galway County Council, the local community, and businesses in the town. The facilities will be opened at 1pm on Sunday by Mayor of County Galway Pat Hynes. "The positive result you will see in the playgrounds in Loughrea came about not just as a result of local pressure, but because of an approach we were working on in the council for the last number of years to promote," Mayor Hynes said. "It is as a result of work of the cultural and corporate affairs strategic policy committee of the council, of which I was chair, in promoting a partnership and community led approach to play, that this is able to happen." The newly revamped play area consists of a state of the art children's play park, to be knows as Sugradh agus Spraoi, with various zones of suitability for age groups from two to 12. The area has been designed so that many of the activities are suitable for children with special needs, and all areas are connected by pathways to ensure complete accessibility on site. The adventure park for teens includes a range of climbing and swinging pieces, as well as an adventure challenge course and a skating area. The park has been named Lakeside Challenge and will contain Galway's first skating area outside the city. "We are so relieved and pleased to see our ideas for a whole new environment for all our children finally near completion," said Sylvia Burke of the Playground Development Group, who has been closely involved with the development of the project. "This has been a huge effort for the community and businesses in the town in terms of fundraising and some of us have given a lot of our personal time to see it happen. We have worked hand in hand with the Council and particularly with the play officer and the local office, and this has been a welcome opportunity to do so." Sunday's fun day will feature face painters, juggling workshops with Galway Community Circus, a fire tender provided by the Galway County Council, and lots of fun and games. Children will, of course, also have the opportunity to try out the new play equipment.

From Bulgaria to North Carolina via GMIT's School of Business
Following her outstanding performance in the Bachelor of Business (Honours) programme at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Veselina Vracheva, a Bulgarian national, has been awarded a scholarship from Western Carolina University to attend their MBA programme on a no tuition fee basis. "During her time in GMIT Veselina has proved she is an outstanding student, and is fully deserving of this award and recognition," said Larry Elwood head of the School of Business at GMIT. "Within the School of Business the whole concept of international education experience is something which we both encourage and facilitate. Next year, for instance, we will have students from the Business School studying for either a full academic year or a single semester in North America, and throughout mainland Europe. We have always found that students returning from such study periods have benefited both culturally, and academically from their experiences." Veselina is delighted and excited about the prospects of postgraduate study in the United States. "An MBA qualification is something which is highly valued in the workplace, but the opportunity to both study and live in the Unites States over two years is beyond my wildest dreams," she said.
