Council refuses permission for Quirke Road commercial building
BY KERNAN ANDREWS An application for a two-storey commercial building on the Seamus Quirke Road has been refused planning permission by the Galway City Council on the grounds that it would further increase traffic in the area. Buck Properties Ltd, Dublin 6, applied to the Galway City Council for permission to construct a two storey commercial block comprising retail at ground floor, offices at first floor, access tunnel to underground car park, surface car park, and associated services at Seamus Quirke Road. Objections were received from the Shantalla Residents Association and the Ashe Road Residents Association. Both were concerned that the proposed development was too high and that it could generate extra traffic on the roads. The city council refused to grant planning permission on a number of grounds. It said the additional traffic the development would generate could "interfere with the safety and free flow nature of the traffic on the road". The council also felt the proposal was "premature" pending the improvement and upgrading of the Seamus Quirke Road "which may or may not facilitate the improvements to the site access". The council concluded that the proposed development would be contrary to provisions of the development plan and the proper planning ands sustainable development of the area.
