Development plan in the pipeline for Craughwell
BY UNA SINNOTT A public consultation process will begin in the coming weeks for the preparation of a draft development plan for Craughwell. Cllr Ciaran Cannon has welcomed the development, saying there is a need for a framework for orderly development in the village. "Craughwell is currently listed as a settlement centre within our County Development Plan and I have always felt that the drawing of a crude circle around the village is not the way to plan for its future needs," he said. "Being only a few minutes from Galway city, Craughwell is set to come under immense development pressure and it is important that a proper framework for this development is laid down now. No one is suggesting that no development should take place, but rather that it should happen in an orderly way." A public consultation meeting will take place in the next few weeks, and following this process a draft village development plan will be drawn up. The draft plan will then go on public display and submissions will be invited from the public. All submissions will then be considered by the Galway County Council before the development plan is finalised. "This will be an important opportunity for all members of the Craughwell community to have their say on how their village should develop," Cllr Cannon added. "It is important that they receive the support of all councillors in ensuring that any further development of the village happens in a gradual, controlled manner and is accompanied by adequate community and amenity space."

New off-licence for Aldi Stores at Galway Retail Park
Aldi Stores (Ireland) Ltd has been granted a retailer's off-licence which will allow it to sell spirits, wine and beer at its new premises at Galway Retail Park, Headford Road, Galway. The company, which already has premises at Westside and Gort, made the application to operate an off-licence at its new premises, formerly known as Electric World, at Units 7 and 8 Galway Retail Park, at Galway District Court this week. The court was told architects have totally refurbished the existing premises and no licence had been attached to the premises prior to this. Inspector Pat McHugh said gardai had no objection to the application provided that the area of the store which will sell alcohol can be cordoned off on Good Fridays. Store manager, Ronan Walsh, informed Judge Mary Fahy that the new store will employ 15 people who had received training in the licensing laws and would look for identification from customers they felt might be underage. Judge Fahy granted the licence to the company, which has registered offices at 67/68 Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin.
