NUIG applies for temporary car park
NUI, Galway has applied to the Galway City Council for planning permission for a temporary car park with 198 spaces. The car park has been proposed for the existing playing pitch area to the north of the Quincentennial Bridge on the NUIG campus. According to a letter from Holohan Architects to the city council, the car park is necessary as "a temporary arrangement is needed to facilitate the closure of an existing car park to the south of the bridge which is the site for a proposed sports building".

Bus Eireann seeks licence to run service to Galway Clinic
BY MARY O'CONNOR The decision by Bus Eireann to apply to the Department of Transport for a licence to provide a service to the Galway Clinic is a positive step in the overall development of the city, according to City Councillor Michael Leahy. His comments came in the wake of a meeting with Bus Eireann's district manager Jim Wooley. Councillor Leahy said he was delighted that a licence was being sought for this route. "The Galway Clinic is a new and welcome piece of infrastructure to our city. The hospital has integrated itself into the hearts and minds of people by providing state-of-the-art medical facilities and also by providing employment for our citizens. It is only natural that the Galway Clinic would be integrated into the city's transport infrastructure as well." Councillor Leahy said that the provision of a bus route to the Galway Clinic would be a positive step in the overall development of the city. "The last few months have seen little in the way of progress in our city. Vital infrastructural projects have been threatened by a lack of direction from our city's elected representitives. The naive and foolish attempt by the Green party aided by the Labour party to block the much needed City Outer Bypass recently is evidence of this." He says he is raising the issue of the licence of this bus route with the Minister for Transport in an " attempt to get Galway city moving again".

New shopfront and side entrance sought for Powell's
BY KERNAN ANDREWS Planning permission is being sought from the Galway City Council for new doors to extend the shopfront and install a new side entrance to Powell's The Four Corners. Colm Powell has applied to the city council for planning permission for a number of proposed works for The Four Corners, No 53 William Street. The building is a protected structure. The application seeks permission to remove plaster/lintol and provide new doors to the side entrance; extend the shopfront and provide new doors to the side entrance; provide signage/overhead signage lighting to extended shopfront; and form new internal steps at side entrance. An impact assessment on the proposed works was carried out by Richard Crumlish, consultant archaeologist. According to his report, No 51/53 William Street dates from c1600/1700 and is a building of "late mediaeval fabric with interior and exterior features of note". The building was "largely altered" c1850. No 1 Abbeygate Street dates from c1650 and has "late mediaeval dripstones". In the early 1800s it was refurbished and a shopfront inserted. In the conclusion to his report, Mr Crumlish says the proposed removal of fabric to facilitate the insertion of a new doorway "will not adversely impact" on the building's mediaeval fabric as the section proposed for removal does not appear to be mediaeval in date. Mr Crumlish added that the removal of the fabric above the doorway should be monitored by a suitably qualified archaeologist.
