CATS:
Ginger is a lovely eightmonth old ginger/white lad who is very shy and needs a patient owner to help him learn to trust again. He was picked up straying in a car park, confused and afraid. Can you help him on his road to recovery?

for Galwaymen in lifeboat fundraiser
Next Monday (August 8) will see three Galwaymen begin a demanding threeday charity cycle from Dublin to the sandy shores of Cleggan, Connemara. The brave trio, Neil McLoughlin and brother Eamonn, both from Cleggan, along with Kenneth Fahy from Rosscahill, will undertake this 200 mile journey in aid of the Lifeboats Service. The journey is timed to coincide with the commencement of the annual Roundstone Summerfest on August 11, a traditional Irish music festival, which also doubles as a four-day charity fundraiser for the RNLI. The lads are quick to emphasise the important role of the RNLI in Galway. "We chose the lifeboats for a number of reasons, firstly being from a coastal area we appreciate the hard work that all the RNLI team put in year in year out also myself and Eamonn have two cousins who are crew

A big thank you
A big 'thank-you' goes to all the volunteers who spent their bank holiday weekend doing essential work at our sanctuary. The animals really appreciate what you did for them. So 'woofs and purrs' go to: Duffys Bar Killimor, SuperValu Portumna, Caroline Lardner, Clara Nolan, Emily Nolan, Deirdre O'Dowd, Alice Bunning, Declan Costello, Pearse Marnel, Denise Christie, Catherine Sheedy, Anja Connor, Kay Havelin, Nazrine Gill, Marion Krauthaker, Pamela Bartley, Sinead O'Shea, and Gary Christie. This week's thought pays tribute to an animal who is taken for granted and who deserves our utmost respect for sacrificing its own life, often in the most horrible of ways, to simply feed humans. "Cows are amongst the gentlest of breathing

creatures; none show more passionate tenderness to their young when deprived of them; and, in short, I am not ashamed to profess a deep love for these quiet creatures."
Thomas DeQuincey (1785-1859)

who is great with other dogs and children. He has the cutest face and is so affectionate. His friend Bobbie, a black/white collie of the same age, was also dumped with him. Bobbie is currently being fostered, but would love a 'forever mum' of his own. Shep: is an intelligent one-year-old b/w collie type who has been with the GSPCA for the past seven months. Shep is gentle and clever and

Regal Salem is a one year old pure black neutered male who is very friendly. Despite his daunting name Salem is not looking for a witch to partner up with, but a happy household who will appreciate his glossy dark coat and finer qualities.

If you can make one of these lads' lives happier, please phone the sanctuary at: 09096-76397 (Opening Hours: 10.00 am to 12.30 pm and 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm), or the GSPCA office: 091-563631 / 568572. members on the Clifden Lifeboat, Kenneth can't swim so I suppose that's a good enough reason for him," said Neil. Their planned route is expected to take them along the Grand Canal from Dublin towards Athlone, then through Galway city for the end of the second day. The final day brings them through Rosscahill into Connemara, and bizarrely the men are putting themselves in for more punishment by crossing the Maumturk mountains before arriving in picturesque Cleggan. The men themselves are looking forward to the 200 mile trek but admit it is not going to be easy. "The final day will be the toughest but the one I'm most looking forward

to" said Eamonn "after crossing the mountains, probably partly on foot, we'll be back in familiar territory passing though Clifden and completing the coast to coast trip by jumping off the pier in Cleggan" According to an RNLI spokesperson: "We are delighted that the lads are doing this in aid of RNLI, it's a tough cycle and we wish them all the best." If you would like to make a donation to the RNLI for the `Coast to Coasters' you can do so by calling into the Galway Advertiser offices, Eyre Square or Taaffe's Bar, Shop Street, Galway.
