Rescue operation saves scallop boat off Galway coast
BY JENNIFER HOUGH A stricken scallop boat that was in danger of sinking one mile off Gollum Head in Connemara was successfully escorted to Mace Pier in south Connemara early yesterday morning. The 10 metre boat, which had one man on board, began taking on water just after six o'clock and sent out a Mayday distress signal. The Aran Island lifeboat, and search and rescue helicopter were both called to come to the fishing boat's assistance. However, the man managed to carry out temporary repairs that kept it afloat until it reached Mace Pier. In a seperate incident the search and rescue helicopter was called to a medical incident on the Aran Islands.
