Man shoved broken glass into brother-in-law's face during pub row
A man who shoved a broken bottle repeatedly into his brother-in-law's face during a row in a pub will serve six months of a two-year sentence, which was imposed at Galway Circuit Criminal Court. Francis Kerrigan (38), 3 Gort Bride, Loughrea, pleaded guilty to assaulting his brotherin-law "Red" John Ward, causing him harm, at An Bodhran pub, Loughrea, on December 4, 2003. He also pleaded guilty to public affray on the same occasion. Garda Gerry Carroll said Kerrigan was in the pub drinking with John Ward, his wife, Margaret Kerrigan, who is a sister of the accused and another man named Michael Conroy. A row broke out between Kerrigan and Conroy and when John Ward went to break it up, Kerrigan knocked him to the ground and shoved either a broken bottle or glass repeatedly into his face. The victim suffered permanent facial scarring to his nose and lip and has been the subject of jibes around Loughrea since, Garda Carroll said. "He has been humiliated by this. He is being called names because his face is scarred for life. He feels very strongly that justice be served here today," the garda said. "Mr Ward was very upset and has been on antidepressants since the attack. He has gone the route of the courts and has abided by everything I've told him to do. He has not approached the accused and has moved out of his former address because of snide remarks from members of Kerrigan's family," the garda explained. Kerrigan readily admitted his involvement when interviewed and said he had very little recollection of events. He said he was very sorry for his behaviour and admitted he never had any ill feelings towards the victim. Judge Harvey Kenny said this had been a very violent assault which had caused permanent scarring to Mr Ward's face. He noted that Kerrigan had positively engaged with the Probation Service and that his wife was doing a course in Public Health nursing, so that she could help members of the Travelling community. While she was doing this Kerrigan had been minding their children and was behaving himself. The judge said that in spite of this, he had to impose a custodial sentence because of the seriousness of the assault. He imposed a two-year sentence but suspended the last 18 months for three years, on condition that Kerrigan not reoffend for three years, and on his release he continue under the care of the probation service for two years.
