Queue of people sold drink after hours at rear of Aran hotel
The owner of the only hotel on Inis Oirr, the smallest of the Aran Islands, used foul language to a Garda sergeant when told to clear his premises in the early hours of the morning while his staff were observed selling cans of lager to a queue of people at the rear of the premises. Martin Flaherty, of Ostan Inis Oirr, pleaded guilty at Aran District Court last Thursday to permitting intoxicating liquor to be consumed on his premises at 1.25am on August 16 last. Sergeant Christy Joyce gave evidence that closing time on the night was 11 pm. He said he visited Ostan Inis Oirr twice on the night in question and had asked the accused, who was "most uncooperative" to clear the premises on both occasions. The sergeant said he visited other premises on the same night and they had all cleared their premises when told to do so. Sergeant Joyce said he noticed staff from Flaherty's hotel selling cans of lager to a large queue of people at the rear of the hotel when he revisited the premises. When he approached Flaherty about selling liquor after hours, he became abusive and said, "What the f*** do you expect me to do about it." Superintendent Mick Curley pointed out that the premises was put in order before Sergeant Joyce left that night. He said Flaherty had one previous conviction in 1995, for a similar offence. Defence solicitor, Anne Jennings said her client had deviated from the norm and while this offence occurred over a year ago there had been no repetition. She said her client had apologised to Sergeant Joyce for his behaviour and attitude on the night. Judge Mary Fahy convicted and fined Flaherty 250, remarking she wouldn't touch his licence this time.
