70,000 expected at hurlers' homecoming
BY KERNAN ANDREWS AND DECLAN VARLEY More than 70,000 people are expected to pack into Galway city on Monday night next for the homecoming of the Galway hurling teams, 24 hours after the senior and minor teams do battle for All-Ireland honours at Croke Park on Sunday. With Eyre Square decommissioned because of the ongoing renovations, there will not be any repeat of the scenes of 1980 when the team were welcomed back into the square. However, a massive security and logistical operation is being put in place to ensure that the smooth football homecomings of 1998 and 2001 are repeated, with the Cathedral car park once again being used as the focal point for the event, which will be held regardless of the results at Croke Park. In total, almost 200,000 people will line the route home to the west for the two teams, but despite this, officials expect the entourage to arrive in Galway city by 8.30pm. The Galway teams will be based in Dublin on Sunday night and will be guests of honour at a banquet in the Citywest Hotel. They will leave Dublin on Monday afternoon and are due to arrive in the Cathedral car park, on at around 6.30pm on Monday. On the way back from Dublin they will be stopping at Ballinasloe, Loughrea, and Craughwell. From 5.30pm The Conquerers will be providing music and song on the stage in the Cathedral car park and manager Willie Carty has promised to write ten new verses of the Galway Are Back single if the McCarthy Cup is brought back to Galway for the first time in 17 years. When the team arrive they will be officially welcomed by the Mayor of Galway Cllr Brian Walsh. There will then be speeches from Cllr Walsh, Galway hurling manager Conor Hayes, team captain Liam Donoghue, and others, with the event and the entire homecoming to be broadcast live on Galway Bay fm. As huge crowds are expected on Monday there will be a large Garda presence to ensure that everything runs smoothly so that people can enjoy the event. There will also be a number of traffic restrictions put in place. On Sunday night there will be restrictions on parking around Nun's Island and from 5pm on Monday, cars parked in the area of Nun's Island will be towed away. However arrangements can be made for local parking.

No more long days for Carraroe ambulance crews
BY MARY O'CONNOR An agreement hammered out earlier this week between the union representing Carraroe ambulance personnel and the Health Service Executive Western Area means that emergency medical technicians at the Connemara base will no longer have to work up to 17-hour days as part of an on-call system. The deal, which was struck on Monday, will result in 24-hour cover being available in the area from September 12 for the first time, says John Dillane, a Carraroe based EMT and spokesperson for the local crew. He says the agreement, which involved the HSE appointing four extra ambulance staff, brings to an end a six-and-a-half year-old situation which had become intolerable for workers. Paying tribute to SIPTU, the EMT's union, and to Ray Bonner, the HSE West's chief ambulance officer for his "very reasonable attitude" and interest in resolving the problem, he said the crew were "delighted" that the issue had been resolved. "This was a huge breakthrough and it is a huge weight off our shoulders. We needed four extra staff. Continued on Page 2
