Eating longer Performing horse to headline Bogman's Ball and later
The Bogmen of Connemara arrived in Donegal this week to meet Texas Ollie and Silver the Wonder Horse who will perform at the annual Bogman's Ball at Peacocke's of Maam Cross on February 26. Still organised by the bogmen to this day, the event has been hosted by the Keogh family at Peacocke's Hotel & Complex, Maam Cross since 1980. The traditional demonstrations of saving turf and cooking steaks on shovels over an open fire is still a vital part of the occasion and these will be on view in an area close to the Quiet Man Cottage (just outside the hotel) where guests will be invited to see poteen being made and enjoy some bogwater punch. Following a five course steak dinner, cabaret and dancing will be provided by the Conquerors, while later still there's a disco for those who want to bop into the small hours. With Food is the new booze in bars since the smoking ban came in leading some bars to develop their menus and even extend their food serving hours. Once such establishment is The Cellar Bar on Eglinton St which, due to customer demand, is now serving food from 9.30am to 8pm. And if its comfort food you're looking for The Cellar's casual style menu will be right up your alley. Meals like bangers and mash, bacon & chip butty, all day breakfast including a new Continental breakfast range, will whet any appetite and make you feel right at home especially if you're a student longing for a homecooked meal. The extended opening hours are going down a real treat according to general manager Adrian Boyle. "There has been a huge culture change with food in Ireland and The Cellar is really excited about developing it.
"Having food in a bar has become as important as having a pint and we are looking forward to making the food experience an enjoyable one for everyone." For instance in February The Cellar will be introducing lunchtime theatre downstairs to entertain diners during their break from the office. And don't forget The Cellar has all the big sports channels including the ones you can't get at home. As they say the proof of the pudding is in the eating so I recommend you try it for yourselves. Should you grow fond of the place, and you probably will, why not join the lunch club which entitles you to get 10 per cent off your lunch. Just ask your server about it. By the way the big 10 per cent off sale at The Cellar's sister company Harvest Off Licence continues until Monday. The sale is on all wines so you can be sure the wine you like will be reduced.
Connemara bogmen Willie Sullivan, Seamus O'Toole, and Michael Connelly travelled with Laura McKay to Glenties, Co Donegal, on Monday to meet Texas Ollie and Silver the Wonder Horse.
Galway singles are going to the dogs
Are you single and feel you're continually barking up the wrong tree when it comes to looking for romance? Well don't despair...it's time to celebrate being single at the `singles' night of the year at Galway Greyhound Stadium on Sunday February 13. Forget boring candlelit dinners or camping by the letterbox waiting for Valentine's romance to arrive in a sugary pink envelope, `Singles are Going to the Dogs' will be much more fun. The refurbished Galway Greyhound Stadium will be exclusively run on the Sunday night for this event. The event is the brainchild of new event management company Those Two Girls who saw a need for an informal, casual singles event where the focus is on having a great time and enjoying yourself. Tickets have already been pre-sold tickets for the event, particularly to singletons in sports clubs and companies looking for an alternative to the regular pub scene on Valentine's Eve. It is being organised in association with online dating website, www.anotherfriend.com and all proceeds are going to GOAL's South-East Asia's Emergency Appeal. Tickets are to be purchased in advance by phoning Those Two Girls Event Management (091) 585501 or visit www.singlesaregoingtothedogs.com

`There's no chance of a council flat, but I can give you an E flat.'
Lots and lots of entries to last week's competition featuring Mayor Connolly playing the piano at the launch of the Bish opera Oklahoma. The best entry is that which was sent in by Pauline Connolly, 44 Tulach Ard, Circular Road, Galway whose entry was: "There's no chance of a council flat, but I can give you an E flat." Well done Pauline and you win a 20 book voucher for Charlie Byrne's Bookshop. Now for this week's competition. The photo features Tanaiste and minister for health Mary Harney pictured with Eugene Farrell, Radiation Thearpy Services Manager at UCHG during her visit to the hospital on Tuesday. Can you tell us what you think is being said or what caption would best describe the photo. Write it on a postcard and send it to Caption Corner, Galway Advertiser. 41-42 Eyre Square, Galway or by e-mail to dvarley@galwayadvertiser.ie. Best of luck -- DV
